Book Babies is an interactive program for the littlest library lovers (babies up to 3) and their caregivers. Enjoy hippo & bear stories, songs, fingerplays, and (oh boy!) play time. AND THE WINNERS ARE…

This morning, the American Library Association announced the top awards in children’s and young adult literature at the ALA Midwinter Meeting.

The winner of this year’s Newbery Medal…Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos.

Two Newbery Honor books were named: Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai and Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin.

This year’s Caldecott medal went to A Ball for Daisy, illustrated and written by Chris Raschka. Also named were three Caldecott Honor Books: Blackout, illustrated and written by John Rocco; Grandpa Green, illustrated and written by Lane Smith, and Me … Jane, illustrated and written by Patrick McDonnell.

Kadir Nelson, author and illustrator of Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans, was named the winner of this year’s Coretta Scott King Author Book award.

On January 23rd, the American Library Association will announce 18 awards, including the renowned Caldecott and Newbery Medals. Want to find out more about these awards – and how to view a LIVE webcast? Check out the ALA Youth Media Awards page.

New Year’s Resolution #1: Get homework help!

Mystified by math? Puzzled by a project? Don’t despair! Homework help is here at The Field Library! Start your year off with our favorite Teacher in the Library, Mrs. Livingston.

When? Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 pm – when school is in session (but if there’s no school, or a half day, or vacation the next day, then there is no teacher). OK, we know that’s a little complicated, so we’ll make it simple: PLEASE CHECK THE CALENDAR FOR ALL “TEACHER IN THE LIBRARY” DATES!

A Tale Waggers Holiday!

Yesterday, our Tale Waggers kept us spellbound with holiday tales. We heard a story about Santa taking the bus: a tale of one snowy evening: …and lots of other funny and poignant tales of the season. How to build a gingerbread house.

First, you have to have put up your walls and roof with lots of sticky vanilla icing. Then you have to decorate with heaps of marshmallows, candy canes, skittles, m&m’s, sprinkles, candy corn, coconut, fruit loops, and pretzels! Sometimes you have to take a candy-eating break (because building a house is hard work!).

That’s what dozens of children did last week at The Field Library. And boy, was it ever fun!

Notice how handy the frosting is when you want to make snow:

Pretzels are really cool to build with, aren’t they?
