The Katonah Museum of Art invited librarians to a special viewing of their latest exhibits, “Storied City: New York in Picture Book Art” and  “New York, New York! The 20th Century.”  I have a soft spot for picture books, so I was particularly interested in the picture book art.  What a thrill to see original art work from over 35 picture books — and how fascinating to see the neighborhoods and buildings of New York through the eyes of so many talented illustrators!  I was especially interested in seeing Brian Selznick’s artwork (below) because I am currently reading his fabulous new book, Wonderstruck.

We had a chance to visit The Learning Center at the museum, which is a wonderful activity space where kids can explore and create, as well as see original picture book art.  Finally, we went to a workshop about the Whole Book Approach to using the picture book as an art form.

I came back to the library with some great ideas for programs – and with a new appreciation for everything that goes into illustrating and designing a picture book. Thanks to the staff at the KMA for a really interesting morning!
