Three young Field Library Children’s Room patrons had the time of their lives participating in the FIRST Lego League International Championship in St. Louis, MO.  Dylan, Tejahn and Luke met kids from all over the world and saw robots designed to assist children with diabetes, offer independent mobility for visually-impaired people and help physical therapy patients using robotic Wii programs.

Said librarian Sally Bentley, who supervised the trip, “I am so grateful that we were able to have these youngsters participate and see all the amazing achievements of other kids.  It was three solid days of celebrating student engineering creativity.  The evidence of teamwork and the spirit of cooperation was everywhere. Our students beamed from the moment they set off  for LaGuardia Airport to the moment we flew home.”

The library is committed to continuing this Robotics FIRST Club, giving the children guidance in science, engineering and team work skills.

“Our mentoring team, The Yorktown Darwinci’s Apprentices, won third place for Team Work, which is one of the most important awards,” said Ms. Bentley. “Coaches Sastry Duri and Indira Rajan can really be proud of all that their team achieved.”

We are so grateful to Mr. Duri and Mrs. Rajan for all their help.  Thanks also to our parent volunteers who made everything go so smoothly. And a huge and heartfelt thank you to all the people whose donations made this trip-of-a-lifetime possible.
